Mother Language Day takes place on the 21 of February each year. The initiative started in Bangladesh over 20 years ago. It was approved by the UNESCO General Conference in 1999 and it was officially introduced on 21 February 2000
UNESCO firmly believes in the importance of cultural and linguistic diversity. It is within its mandate for peace that it works to preserve the differences in cultures and languages that foster tolerance and respect for others.
